I knew the temperatures here in Finland can be steady +5°C throughout the year1 or then vary a lot2. What I didn’t know is how large those fluctuations have been throughout the history. In January, which is statistically the coldest month of the year, the lowest temperature ever has been –51.5°C while the highest has been +10.9°C. In July, the statistically warmest month of the year, the lowest has been –5.0°C and the highest +37.2°C. All these measurement have been recorded at the official measurement stations (highs and lows at different stations, of course) of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. There could have even been higher and lower temperatures elsewhere.

  1. Not kidding. It can be that warm/cold every season. Usually associated with rainfall. Lovely, isn’t it?

  2. Even within a day. I have witnessed over 20°C swings within 12 hours. However, here I am referring to seasonal changes and year-to-year fluctuations.

Nice. I have apparently burned the skin on my shoulders during that swimming center visit (outside pool, we were there around noon). I should stay inside for the whole summer, right?

Fingers crossed!

I wanted to go for a run tonight. Because I am alone with the boys, I normally wouldn’t be able to do that. However, I promised to take the boys for a bike ride too. I put on my running gear and ran while they rode their bikes. Problem solved. ?

Of course, it was not that great run, but a pretty decent one considering that company. I could do these more often and use the kiddo as a natural pace controller.

Their opening hours are fairly regular compared to what they in the other swimming halls in this town. For example, the hall closest to us is open Mon-Fri at very irregular times1. Also, it has one very small pool (not suitable for small-ish kids, though) and you need to have a multiticket that one needs to buy from another swimming hall2 in advance.

There has been talks that we would get a ”real” swimming center also here in Matinkylä where we live. Those talks have been going on since the 1970s, but this time they have assigned a place for it. I wouldn’t hold my breath until I can actually go to swim there.

  1. Though it is closed during the summer, like almost all swimming halls. ?

  2. You can buy multitickets (10 or 25 accesses) from any other swimming hall and you can use it in any swimming hall in this town.

I thought the center would open early as it does every other day (at 0600 on Tuesdays and Thursdays; at 0630 on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays; at 0900 on Sundays). Wednesday appears to be a weird exception day for them. ?‍♂

It was nice to note that the swimming center opens at 10 when you are at the parking lot few minutes past 8. We will go swimming after lunch then.

A co-worker posted a screenshot to the company chat of the forecast for San Francisco to where he will be going this week. According to the screenshot it will be colder in SF than here in Finland. He was pretty happy about that. ?

I’ve been listening to music a lot more lately. Great music combined with the free time I have had during my vacation (I know, ?!) has made me miss playing music myself. Maybe I need to dedicate some of rare free time to re-learn the basics again so that I can play some simple things. That would make me happy, I don’t need to learn any new complex skills for now.

Yet another weird thing in food production. Usually locally produced foods are not that expensive. Maybe they use some funky production method that is expensive.
