I had forgotten how boring driving is when you drive 120 km/h on a fairly straight and dull highway. Drove to Tampere to visit my sister (and now we are back). It takes about 2 hours of almost completely on high-speed (100 or 120 km/h, which are the highest allowed speeds here) highways one way. Also, the car has cruise control that means that I didn’t need to press the gas pedal for a long, long time.

Yeah, Microsoft took quite much artistic liberties there. Google got closer, though Jaakko threw a stone from the stove of a sauna. I wonder from how did they come up with stomach there.

For the background, the waters are hottest, statistically speaking, on the day when it’s the name day of Jaakko. Hence, folklore saying that Jaakko throws a (cold) stone and the waters start cooling.

Ouch indeed.

Yep. Devices that already run hot do not mix well with warm weather.

Even that –5.0°C would be nice. Then again, here the crops are pretty much ruined already because it has been so dry for so long…

I knew the temperatures here in Finland can be steady +5°C throughout the year1 or then vary a lot2. What I didn’t know is how large those fluctuations have been throughout the history. In January, which is statistically the coldest month of the year, the lowest temperature ever has been –51.5°C while the highest has been +10.9°C. In July, the statistically warmest month of the year, the lowest has been –5.0°C and the highest +37.2°C. All these measurement have been recorded at the official measurement stations (highs and lows at different stations, of course) of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. There could have even been higher and lower temperatures elsewhere.

  1. Not kidding. It can be that warm/cold every season. Usually associated with rainfall. Lovely, isn’t it?

  2. Even within a day. I have witnessed over 20°C swings within 12 hours. However, here I am referring to seasonal changes and year-to-year fluctuations.

Nice. I have apparently burned the skin on my shoulders during that swimming center visit (outside pool, we were there around noon). I should stay inside for the whole summer, right?

Fingers crossed!

I wanted to go for a run tonight. Because I am alone with the boys, I normally wouldn’t be able to do that. However, I promised to take the boys for a bike ride too. I put on my running gear and ran while they rode their bikes. Problem solved. ?

Of course, it was not that great run, but a pretty decent one considering that company. I could do these more often and use the kiddo as a natural pace controller.

Their opening hours are fairly regular compared to what they in the other swimming halls in this town. For example, the hall closest to us is open Mon-Fri at very irregular times1. Also, it has one very small pool (not suitable for small-ish kids, though) and you need to have a multiticket that one needs to buy from another swimming hall2 in advance.

There has been talks that we would get a ”real” swimming center also here in Matinkylä where we live. Those talks have been going on since the 1970s, but this time they have assigned a place for it. I wouldn’t hold my breath until I can actually go to swim there.

  1. Though it is closed during the summer, like almost all swimming halls. ?

  2. You can buy multitickets (10 or 25 accesses) from any other swimming hall and you can use it in any swimming hall in this town.
